Latvia is a North-Eastern European state near the Baltic Sea. It has a population of about 2.2 million people half of which lives in or near its capital Riga. The official language of Latvia is Latvian (an old Baltic language) but Russian is also widely used. In Riga you will be understood if you speak English but in other regions of Latvia this could be a problem if you don’t speak any of the two major languages.
Latvia has its own currency called Lats (divided in 100 santīmi). 1 Lats is about 2 US Dollars or one Euro is precisely 0.702804 Lats (official exchange rate). The shops, restaurants and especially hotels allow payment in all major payment cards such as Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard, Maestro. Also American Express can be used in many places.
The easiest way to get to Latvia is by plane to Riga Airport. Riga Airport is connected to about 50 cities mainly in Europe. Other possibility to arrive in Latvia by plane is to Liepāja Airport which serves signifficantly less flights and the routes may change from time to time.
You can also get to Latvia by ferry, train or by bus. And, of course, by car.
Public transportation outside Riga in Latvia is far from being very developed. So if you would like to travel around the country (which is absolutely a must to see world famous places!), the best option is to rent a car. Latvia is no scary country in terms of driving so you will be very comfortable driving around.
